Yes, this is what happened to me. I was 12 weeks pregnant with my first child and experiencing horrible low back pain as I was adjusting my own patients, helping their pain go away. Read more to find out what I did to stop it and how this could also affect you.
As a chiropractor who frequently sees pregnant women, I knew that low back pain can be a part of pregnancy. In fact, low back pain is what most often triggers pregnant women to visit a chiropractor. Yet I was surprised to experience such intense low back pain, to the point I almost couldn’t walk, at 12 weeks pregnant. I knew that something needed to change.
I started doing some thinking about what I was doing that is triggering this pain. I was getting adjusted weekly and was pretty active, working out at least 3-4 times a week. My diet was fairly clean, especially with being pregnant. I soon realized the culprit of the pain was me adjusting others! I would normally stand on one side of the table to adjust, which caused me to have my body at a weird angle (see photo below). This leads to muscle and ligament tightness and misalignments in my pelvis. I couldn’t help, but think that this could also be the case for women in other professions. Hair stylists, dental hygienists and RNs come to mind first. It can be easy to get in the same routine. Once I started making some modifications, particularly alternating which side of the table I used, the pain has gone away. In that time, I increased the frequency that I got adjusted and did a lot of stretching. I also applied Rock Tape to my low back (see photo below), which provided good support between adjustments.
I am now 21 weeks pregnant and have been feeling great! I am still alternating sides of the chiropractic table and stretching. I no longer need the Rock Tape or as frequent of adjustments. The second trimester energy is finally starting to hit, so I am able to tackle more projects at work and home.
If you or someone you know is pregnant and also experiencing low back pain, please let them know that there are things they can do to help. Also if any of you are interested in learning more about Rock Tape, feel free to check out my class discussing foam rolling and rock tape on October 12th here at the clinic. To find more information on the class click here. We at Rochester Chiropractic & Wellness would love to help out anyway we can!
Notice how in this position it can create tension in my low back if I always am on the same side of the table.
This was the Rock Tape pattern which provided me the most relief.

Dr. Jordan
